This compelling set of four French hand-colored engravings depicts episodes from the life of Jean Henri Masers de Latude, the celebrated 18th-century prisoner and escapee whose story became a symbol of resistance to the abuses of the ancien régime. Published in Paris by Dopter during the early 19th century, the sequential scenes follow Latude from his encounter with Madame de Pompadour through his arrest, dramatic escape from the Bastille, and eventual public recognition.

Each engraving combines finely rendered architectural interiors, period costume, and expressive figure groups with delicate hand-applied color. French titles and narrative text appear beneath the images, giving the set both historical and storytelling appeal. The engravings are uniformly presented beneath glass with layered cream and blue matting in matching gilt frames, creating a substantial gallery-style arrangement when displayed together.
