This finely modeled patinated bronze bust of Michelangelo is after a model by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, created in Paris prior to 1883. Carrier-Belleuse was renowned for his expressive portrait busts and historical figures, and this example captures Michelangelo with remarkable psychological depth, presenting the artist as a contemplative Renaissance master rather than an idealized hero.
The bust displays rich surface modeling, with deeply worked facial features, textured beard, and draped garments that emphasize weight and movement. The dark patinated bronze is set atop a gilt bronze socle and black base, which is inscribed “MICHEL-ANGE.” The contrast between the warm gilt elements and darker patina enhances the sculptural presence, making it an impactful decorative object suitable for a desk, console, or library shelf.
The sculpture is in nice antique condition, consistent with age and normal use. The patina shows gentle, even wear that adds character and depth without detracting from the presentation. Overall, this is a refined and scholarly decorative bronze, ideal for collectors of 19th-century French sculpture, classical subjects, or artist portraiture. 9.5h x 5w x 3d
