Constructed primarily of pine, the chest retains wonderful evidence of traditional hand craftsmanship. The drawers are joined with hand-cut dovetails, while the substantial lift top opens on early iron hinges to reveal a deep storage well. Five graduated-looking drawer fronts visually organize the façade, although the upper three are false fronts concealing the blanket compartment and the lower two are functional drawers. Applied molding around the drawer fronts, molded edges at the top and base, and shaped bracket feet provide just enough architectural detail. The surface has developed a particularly attractive warm amber color, with knots, grain, tool marks, old marks, and generations of wear giving the piece the kind of character that cannot be convincingly reproduced.
The chest is in nice antique condition with wear, scratches, small losses, surface irregularities, old marks, shrinkage, and other imperfections consistent with more than two centuries of age and normal use. The top and case show particularly appealing age and patina, and the interior retains the straightforward utilitarian character of an early piece of household furniture. Both lower drawers remain useful, as does the spacious lift-top compartment. With abundant storage and a relatively simple form, this is an early American antique that remains exceptionally practical today—equally suited to a bedroom, hallway, living room, or country interior while retaining the unmistakable character and story of its long working life.
