This impressive bronze sculpture is a reduction of Taureau Romain (Roman Bull), one of the most celebrated animal subjects by the renowned French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Clesinger (1814–1883). Originally modeled during the artist’s travels in Italy, the work captures the strength and dignity of a Roman breeding bull with remarkable realism and vitality. Cast by the prestigious Barbedienne Foundry, one of the foremost French art foundries of the 19th century, the sculpture reflects the period’s fascination with both classical subjects and naturalistic animal sculpture.

The bull is portrayed standing confidently with head slightly lowered, emphasizing its muscular build and powerful stance. Clesinger’s mastery is evident in the carefully modeled anatomy, from the textured hide and pronounced musculature to the expressive head and sweeping horns. The sculpture bears the title Taureau-Romain on the base and is marked for both the Barbedienne Foundry and the celebrated Roman founder J. Clesinger, Rome 1858. The rich bronze surface has developed an attractive aged patina over time, with areas of warm brown and green oxidation that enhance its character and authenticity.

The sculpture is in nice antique condition and displays beautifully. It retains a pleasing untouched surface with age-appropriate wear, oxidation, and patina consistent with its age. Minor surface marks and variations in color are present throughout, contributing to the sculpture’s antique appeal. A handsome and highly decorative example of 19th-century French bronze sculpture, it is equally suited to a desk, library, study, or collection of fine animalier bronzes. 8.25h x 9.5 x 3.5
