Italian Renaissance Revival Carved Walnut Corner Chair, c.1880

This dramatic Italian Renaissance Revival corner chair dates to circa 1880 and captures the period’s fascination with the richly ornamented furniture of Renaissance Italy. Its unusual wraparound form was designed to sit neatly in a corner while offering a striking sculptural presence from every angle. Equal parts furniture and decorative art, it would make an impressive accent chair in a library, entry hall, bedroom, or collected living space.

Carved in walnut, the chair features a curving horseshoe-shaped crest enriched with scrolling foliage and centered by a boldly carved mask. Pierced back panels incorporate fantastic winged creatures, leafy scrolls, and intertwined ornament, while turned and foliate-carved supports continue the detail around the frame. Deeply carved aprons, floral corner blocks, and turned legs complete the architectural design. The generously padded seat is upholstered in a pale textured fabric and finished with decorative nailheads.

The chair is in nice antique condition with expected wear and patina from age and use. The later upholstery remains attractive and usable, and the richly carved walnut frame displays beautifully. 31h x 27w x 26d seat height 20
