An exceptional English Regency schoolgirl needlework sampler stitched by Charlotte Rees at the age of eleven and dated 1816, offering a remarkable glimpse into the education and artistry of the early nineteenth century. Created as both an exercise in needlework and moral instruction, this beautifully preserved sampler features an inspiring devotional verse alongside a wealth of symbolic motifs, reflecting the values and accomplishments expected of young ladies during the Regency period. The inclusion of the maker’s name, age, and date gives the piece a deeply personal connection to its young creator while greatly enhancing its historical significance.

Executed in silk threads on a linen ground, the sampler is richly decorated with a central Tree of Life, flowering baskets, birds, deer, hearts, geometric motifs, and an architectural depiction of a church, all enclosed within a colorful repeating floral border. The balanced composition, fine stitching, and harmonious palette demonstrate the considerable skill Charlotte had achieved by such a young age. It is beautifully presented in a handsome birdseye maple frame, whose warm figured grain complements the sampler while providing an elegant period-appropriate presentation. Together, the sampler and frame create a striking display that is equally compelling as an important piece of early English needlework and as a beautiful work of folk art.

The sampler is in nice antique condition consistent with its age and more than 200 years of history. It retains a wonderful mellow color palette with expected toning to the linen ground and minor age-related fading that enhance its authentic character. The birdseye maple frame shows light wear consistent with age and complements the textile beautifully. Overall, it presents exceptionally well and remains a highly collectible example of Regency-era schoolgirl embroidery and a charming survivor of England’s rich needlework tradition. 26h x 18.5w x 1d
