The “step down” designation refers to the distinctive shaping of the crest rail, which gently graduates across the top, giving the chairs a subtle architectural presence. Signed examples such as these offer a wonderful connection to an identified maker working within the rich tradition of New England chairmaking.

These chairs feature beautifully executed bamboo-form turnings to the legs and stretchers, a detail that adds both visual interest and a touch of sophistication to what is otherwise a practical country form.
