This Antique Late Federal Period Flame Mahogany Paw Foot Four Drawer Chest, dating to around 1840, is a stunning example of American craftsmanship from the Federal period. The chest is constructed from rich flame mahogany, showcasing a vibrant and striking grain pattern. The four drawers are fitted with original crystal knobs, adding a touch of sparkle to the deep, warm wood. The carved, twisted columns on the sides of the chest give it a stately presence, while the carved paw feet add both strength and elegance. These paw feet, along with the finely turned columns, contribute to the piece’s balanced and graceful appearance.

At the top corners of the chest, brass cups inset into turned wood fixtures are likely remnants of what were originally candle holders. This design feature, typical of the Federal period, would have served both a decorative and practical function. It’s possible that these cups were added to the chest as part of a later modification, but given their positioning and form, the most plausible explanation is that they were indeed intended as candle holders, a common feature of furniture from the period.

The top of the chest shows some wear and sun damage, as seen in the pictures, but the wood remains quite serviceable. Despite this, the chest retains its original beauty and charm, with the flame mahogany, crystal hardware, and paw feet all contributing to its timeless appeal. This piece continues to be both a functional storage solution and a decorative element, offering a beautiful combination of historical craftsmanship and classic design. 39h x 44w x 22d
