A charming early 19th-century grain-painted pine one-drawer blanket chest, probably from Barnstable, Cape Cod, circa 1820. This fine New England example features a lift-top lid over a deep storage well and a single full-width drawer below. The chest sits on shaped bracket feet and retains its original forged iron side handles and beautifully figured faux-grain finish, hand-painted to imitate rich mahogany.

Inside, the drawer is lined with pages from the Barnstable Journal dated 1829 and 1830 — an important historical clue that helps confirm the chest’s Cape Cod origin and period authenticity. The case shows early construction details including forged strap hinges and square-nailed joinery, while the interior retains its original dry surface. The combination of practical design and decorative paintwork reflects the region’s blend of simplicity and refinement during the Federal era.

In nice antique condition consistent with age and use, showing expected wear and scattered touch-ups to the painted surface, small age cracks, and light abrasions. The finish has mellowed to a warm, glowing patina that beautifully showcases the artistry of early 19th-century rural New England craftsmanship. 42h x 49w x 24d
