An elegant mid 19th century interpretation of the classic George II Gainsborough armchair, this piece captures the refined proportions and sculptural presence that made the form so enduring. Originally designed as a comfortable yet formal seating option for drawing rooms, the Gainsborough chair is known for its open arms and generous stance—both beautifully expressed here in a way that feels equally at home in traditional or transitional interiors.

The richly toned mahogany frame features graceful cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet, complemented by well-carved knees and a decorative seat rail adorned with a repeating carved motif. The open arms are nicely shaped with subtle carving, adding both visual interest and a comfortable resting point. The upholstery, done in a soft light green fabric with a subtle diamond pattern, offers a pleasing contrast to the warmth of the wood, though it now shows its age and would benefit from replacement to bring the piece fully back to its potential.

The chair is in nice antique condition consistent with age and normal use. The frame remains solid and sturdy, with both arms having been professionally repaired and presenting well. The upholstery is intact but shows age-related staining and wear, as noted, and should be considered serviceable for now but ready for updating. Overall, this is a handsome and versatile example of a Gainsborough chair with strong decorative appeal and excellent bones for restoration or immediate use. 38h x 28w x 26d seat height 18
