Crafted in the renowned gunmaking city of Suhl, Germany, this impressive antique double barrel hammer shotgun was made by Christoph Funke around 1880 and represents the exceptional level of craftsmanship for which Suhl gunmakers were celebrated throughout the 19th century. Featuring beautifully figured Damascus twist barrels, exposed rebounding hammers, and finely engraved locks and action, this sporting gun was built during the golden age of European firearms when artistry and function were given equal importance. The maker's name, "Christoph Funke in Suhl," is inlaid in silver on the rib between the barrels, adding an important identifying detail for collectors of German sporting arms.

The shotgun displays extensive hand engraving across the locks, action, tang, trigger guard, and furniture, complemented by finely checkered walnut stocks with an especially distinctive carved buttstock depicting a traditional hunting scene in relief. The Damascus barrels retain their attractive patterned surface, while the elegant lines of the shotgun are enhanced by its sculpted hammer spurs, carved grip, and refined proportions.
