Crafted in the renowned gunmaking city of Suhl, Germany, this impressive antique double barrel hammer shotgun was made by Christoph Funke around 1880 and represents the exceptional level of craftsmanship for which Suhl gunmakers were celebrated throughout the 19th century. Featuring beautifully figured Damascus twist barrels, exposed rebounding hammers, and finely engraved locks and action, this sporting gun was built during the golden age of European firearms when artistry and function were given equal importance. The maker's name, "Christoph Funke in Suhl," is inlaid in silver on the rib between the barrels, adding an important identifying detail for collectors of German sporting arms.

The shotgun displays extensive hand engraving across the locks, action, tang, trigger guard, and furniture, complemented by finely checkered walnut stocks with an especially distinctive carved buttstock depicting a traditional hunting scene in relief. The Damascus barrels retain their attractive patterned surface, while the elegant lines of the shotgun are enhanced by its sculpted hammer spurs, carved grip, and refined proportions. Whether displayed in a sporting collection, library, or hunting lodge, it is an outstanding example of late 19th-century German gunmaking and decorative arts.

The shotgun is in nice antique condition, exhibiting honest wear consistent with its age and use. The metal surfaces retain attractive engraving throughout with an aged patina, while the Damascus barrels continue to display visible patterning. The walnut stock shows scattered handling marks, finish wear, and minor imperfections acquired over nearly a century and a half of use, all of which contribute to its authentic character. The action opens and closes properly, and the hammers and triggers appear to function mechanically; however, this firearm is offered strictly as an antique collectible. It is sold as-is, with no representation or warranty regarding safety, functionality, or suitability for firing. Buyers are solely responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws governing the purchase, ownership, and transfer of antique firearms. Shipping can be arranged where legally permitted upon request. 45l
