Opening the lid reveals a fitted interior with a till containing three concealed secret drawers, a wonderful and increasingly rare feature that speaks to both the craftsmanship and the practical ingenuity of the period. Traditionally used as combined storage and seating, mule chests like this were prized household forms. The carving style and overall construction suggest a possible Irish or Scottish origin, where regional interpretations of the Charles II aesthetic often favored robust build and expressive decoration.
In nice antique condition with wear consistent with age and centuries of use. The interior retains its till and secret drawers, while the exterior shows expected surface wear that contributes to its authentic patina. The drawer pulls are later replacements and not original to the piece. A rare and compelling example of early British Isles furniture for collectors drawn to boldly carved, historically rich antiques. 36h x 53w x 23d
