This charming 19th century American folk art oil painting depicts a grand lakeside resort hotel set within a sweeping mountainous landscape, likely representing a destination in the Adirondacks or elsewhere in New England. The large white hotel, prominently flying American flags from its rooftop towers, overlooks a quiet body of water dotted with small boats, while figures, a bridge, rocky shoreline, and distant mountains bring life and depth to the scene. Paintings such as this offer a wonderful glimpse into the growth of American resort culture during the 19th century, when scenic lakes and mountain retreats became increasingly popular destinations for travelers seeking escape from the country's growing cities.

Painted in oil, the work has the wonderfully direct quality associated with American folk and vernacular landscape painting. The artist devoted considerable attention to the architecture of the hotel and surrounding landscape, balancing the substantial building with an expansive sky and distant mountain ranges. Tiny figures strolling along the shore and crossing the rustic bridge are especially appealing, as are the sailboats and other small craft on the water. The somewhat flattened perspective, careful architectural detail, and atmospheric handling of the distant landscape give the painting considerable character. It is housed in a period gilt frame whose mellowed surface complements the painting beautifully.

The painting is in nice antique condition with age-related surface wear, craquelure, scattered small losses and abrasions, and other imperfections visible in the photographs. The gilt frame likewise shows losses, rubbing, chips, and wear consistent with its age and normal use. We have intentionally left both painting and frame with their existing aged surfaces rather than attempting to erase the evidence of their history. An evocative piece of 19th century Americana, it would be equally at home in a collection of folk art or as a wonderfully atmospheric landscape in a traditional or collected modern interior.
