A handsome 18th-century American Queen Anne walnut lowboy dating to circa 1740–1770, with the graceful proportions and restrained ornament that define the best furniture of the period. The case is arranged with a long upper drawer above three smaller drawers, the center drawer distinguished by a beautifully carved fan or shell motif. A shaped apron with pendant drops and tall cabriole legs ending in pad feet complete the classic Queen Anne profile. Its relatively compact scale and warm walnut surface give the piece an especially appealing presence.
The lowboy is crafted in walnut with secondary woods used in the drawer and case construction. The broad single-board top displays attractive grain and considerable age-related character, with molded edges and shaped corners above the case. The deeply carved shell on the center drawer provides the visual focal point, while the surrounding drawers retain period-style brass hardware. The long, slender cabriole legs are particularly graceful and give the case a lightness that contrasts beautifully with the substantial walnut top. Hand-cut dovetail construction and the visible evidence of traditional cabinetmaking further speak to the piece's early character.
The lowboy is in nice antique condition, with the expected marks, scratches, surface variation, small losses, old repairs, and wear consistent with approximately 250 years of age and normal use. The top shows numerous old scratches and marks that have become part of its warm, well-developed patina, while the case and legs show additional scattered wear and evidence of earlier restoration. There are also losses to portions of the shaped apron and pendant decoration beneath the drawers, as visible in the photographs. These imperfections give the piece an honest sense of age without diminishing its strong overall presentation. It remains a beautiful and highly usable example of early American furniture, equally at home as a traditional lowboy or used today as a console, hall table, or statement piece.
