This striking village rug from the Hamadan region of Northwest Persia dates to the late 19th century and showcases a dynamic field of repeating floral sprays set against a warm brick red ground. The pattern draws the eye with its rhythmic interplay of stylized palmettes and curving leaves, executed in a palette of rich teal, soft ivory, indigo, and olive. The drawing is confident yet slightly whimsical—typical of the tribal weavers in the villages surrounding the city of Hamadan.
The composition is framed by a wonderfully detailed border in a beautiful blue-green, filled with scrolling vinery and floral forms. The rug’s wool pile is soft and dense, with a characteristically coarse cotton foundation, which is consistent with weaving practices in the region at the time. The scale of the design, combined with the bold use of color, gives this piece a strong decorative presence, equally suited to traditional or eclectic interiors.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, and is in nice antique condition with signs of age-related wear that contribute to its authentic charm. A lovely example of Hamadan village weaving with enduring character and appeal.
