Woven by Azeri tribes of the Shahsevan confederation in the late 19th century, this striking kilim captures the full force of nomadic creativity with its bold palette, monumental scale, and vibrant geometric motifs. Anchored by four large, stacked medallions outlined in stepped diamonds, the design is balanced by a field filled with intricately woven latch-hook symbols, rosettes, and amuletic forms rendered in natural vegetal dyes. The deep indigo, rust red, madder, and ivory tones are enhanced by an expansive format, making this a true statement piece for a large entry, great room, or gallery space.
The Shahsevan tribes, historically semi-nomadic weavers in the northwest reaches of Persia (modern-day Iran) and southern Azerbaijan, are known for their highly geometric aesthetic and technically sophisticated flatweaves. This rug’s crisp articulation of classic tribal motifs and its generous proportions suggest it may have been woven for ceremonial or dowry purposes rather than daily domestic use. The weave is fine, the colors richly saturated, and the condition is very good for its age, showing only light wear consistent with careful use.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts. Pieces of this scale and design from the Shahsevan tradition are rare to encounter on the market today, especially in such a collectible size and condition.
