A remarkable example of early Baluch weaving, this small-format prayer rug features a deeply saturated palette and an intricately rendered lattice of diamonds filled with alternating boteh and floral motifs. The asymmetrical field, offset by a prayer arch only subtly suggested in form, demonstrates both the weaver’s creativity and a departure from strictly geometric tribal forms. The deep indigo, madder red, and camel tones create a rich, nuanced visual texture.

The main border—composed of stylized rosettes on a dark ground—provides contrast and balance to the dense interior field, while the secondary guards with reciprocal hooked motifs reinforce its tribal identity. The offset knotting and variation in design scale reflect handwoven spontaneity often lost in later commercial production. Small-format Baluch prayer rugs of this age and quality are highly sought-after by collectors for both their rarity and their expressive freedom.

This rug comes from the private collection of a noted antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, and would be a fine addition for collectors of early tribal textiles.
