An original hand-colored lithograph titled “Hudson’s Bay Squirrel (Chickaree, Red Squirrel)” (Plate XIX) from The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, drawn by John James Audubon and published by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia in 1843 as part of the Imperial Bowen Edition.

This lively composition captures two Hudson’s Bay Squirrels—also known as Chickarees or Red Squirrels—nestled among leafy branches. Their animated postures and expressive detail are typical of Audubon’s ability to bring energy and naturalism to every species he portrayed. The lush greens of the foliage contrast beautifully with the warm reddish tones of the squirrels’ fur, creating a scene full of both harmony and motion.

Presented in a gilt wood frame and single matted under glass. In nice antique condition consistent with age, showing scattered foxing and light toning to the sheet, with strong color retention throughout. A fine and authentic early example from Audubon’s monumental Quadrupeds, representing the first large-format natural history series produced entirely in the United States. 34h x 27w x 1d
