This outstanding Caucasian tribal rug is a classic example of the Lori-Pambak Kazak tradition, woven in the northwestern Caucasus during the late 19th century. The rug features three large-scale stepped diamond medallions—each with internal hooked devices—set within a clear rust-red field. The crisp geometry is framed by a bold “running water” border in ivory and indigo, with finely spaced guard bands and simple corner rosettes lending balance and rhythm to the design.

Hand-knotted in soft, lustrous wool on a wool foundation, this rug displays a rich and harmonious natural dye palette: madder red, celadon green, indigo blue, ivory, and soft gold. It remains in fine antique condition, with even wear, intact side cords, and only minor age-related losses to the fringe. The proportions and clarity of the drawing reflect the weaver’s strong tribal vocabulary and technical skill.

Measuring just under 3 by 6 feet, this piece is ideal for use in an entryway, study, or layered under a coffee table. Its bold visual rhythm and historic charm make it equally at home in both traditional and modern interiors.

This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
