A particularly handsome New York Classical mahogany work table dating to circa 1815–1825, made in the sophisticated furniture tradition associated with Duncan Phyfe and his contemporaries. The unusual astragal-ended case gives the table a graceful, almost architectural profile, with hinged rounded lids at either end opening to storage compartments and a pair of drawers centered between them. Its compact scale and finished appearance from all sides would have made it an elegant and useful piece in an early 19th-century parlor, and those same qualities make it remarkably versatile today.
The table is crafted in mahogany with beautifully figured veneers across the case and drawer fronts. The center top is fixed, while the two rounded end sections are hinged to lift and provide access to deep interior compartments. A turned pedestal with a deeply reeded lower section supports the case above a four-part base, while the sweeping legs are enriched with crisply carved acanthus leaves and reeded edges. Particularly appealing are the brass paw-form feet and casters, a distinctly Classical detail that gives the base considerable presence. Small pendant drops beneath the case provide another refined decorative touch.
The table is in nice antique condition, retaining a rich, warm surface with expected marks, scratches, finish variation, and wear consistent with approximately two centuries of age and normal use. There is a section of beaded molding missing from the lower edge of the left curved end, along with additional minor edge wear and scattered surface marks to the top and case. These imperfections are visible in the photographs and do not detract from the table’s overall presentation or usability. Structurally it presents very well and remains both beautiful and genuinely useful—a strong example of New York Classical design that can serve as a work table, occasional table, or distinctive accent piece in a modern interior.
