The chest is crafted in mahogany with beautifully figured drawer fronts and contrasting figured banding outlining the drawers and upper edge of the case. The shaped lower apron is especially appealing, incorporating delicate contrasting inlay and a central oval inlaid reserve—an unusual decorative flourish that gives the chest considerably more personality than a typical bow-front example. Brass concentric-ring pulls and escutcheons complement the warm mahogany, while the four large dovetailed drawers provide excellent storage. The broad top, gracefully bowed facade, turned posts, figured veneers, and inlaid details come together particularly well and speak to the quality and ambition of the original cabinetmaker.
The chest is in nice antique condition, with expected marks, scratches, surface variation, minor veneer imperfections, and wear consistent with approximately two centuries of age and normal use. The piece has evidently undergone a professional restoration at some point in its history, while retaining the warmth and character appropriate to a period chest. The brass pulls and escutcheons are period-correct replacements and are not original to the chest. Scattered wear remains visible to the top, drawer fronts, edges, and legs, as shown in the photographs. Overall, it presents beautifully and remains a highly usable period chest with excellent storage and considerably more decorative interest than the average Federal bow-front.
