A handsome New England Federal mahogany bow-front chest of drawers dating to circa 1810–1825, with the restrained elegance and strong proportions that make period Federal case furniture so appealing. The gently bowed front is arranged with four graduated full-width drawers and framed by tall reeded corner posts terminating in turned legs. Circular carved corner tablets at the top of each post provide a subtle architectural flourish, while the chest’s clean lines and rich mahogany surface give it an understated presence that works equally well in a period room or a more contemporary interior.
The chest is crafted in mahogany with secondary woods used in the traditional manner for the drawer construction and interior components. The broad drawer fronts display attractive natural figure and follow the bow of the case beautifully. Reeded posts, delicate molded edges, turned feet, and the restrained carved roundels are characteristic Federal details, complemented by brass ring pulls with floral backplates. The generously sized drawers provide substantial storage, making this a piece that remains every bit as practical today as it was when made more than two centuries ago.
The chest is in nice antique condition, retaining a warm, dark mahogany surface with considerable character. There are expected marks, scratches, finish variation, small veneer imperfections, and other evidence of age and normal use visible throughout, particularly across the drawer fronts and top. The surface has the pleasing variation and patina one hopes to find on an early piece rather than the uniform appearance of something heavily refinished. Overall, it presents beautifully and remains a substantial, highly usable example of early 19th-century New England Federal furniture. Shipping can be arranged upon request. 42h x 45w x 22d
