A striking example of traditional Himalayan weaving, this antique tribal flatweave likely hails from the Dolpo region of Nepal or nearby Tibetan-influenced communities. Woven in bold stripes of red, black, and olive tones, it showcases a rhythmic, almost meditative quality that would have brought both color and warmth to a humble domestic space.

The rug appears to be woven of hand-spun wool, possibly incorporating yak or highland sheep fibers, with the flat tapestry weave and naturally dyed colors typical of utilitarian rugs from the region. These rugs were often used as sleeping mats or layered for insulation in remote mountain homes. The slight irregularities and visible seams reflect its handmade construction, likely from multiple narrow loom panels stitched together.

Now a rare find outside of its region of origin, this small tribal weaving is a beautiful piece of living history—perfect for display, use in a meditation space, or as a distinctive wall hanging. It comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, MA.
