Woven in the rugged mountains of the Caucasus in the late 19th century, this antique Shirvan or Kuba runner displays the bold geometry and saturated natural dyes that have long defined the region’s weavings. Three stepped medallions anchor the central field, set against a rich crimson and navy ground densely filled with stylized blossoms, angular vines, and floating rosettes. The dynamic zigzag borders and diagonal striped accents are signature motifs of the eastern Caucasian weaving tradition.
This rug is hand-knotted with a wool pile on a wool foundation, and remains in nice antique condition with only minor scattered wear. The colors are deeply saturated and beautifully varied with abrash, giving the rug wonderful movement and a sense of age without compromising clarity. Long runners of this scale and age are particularly desirable, especially those with such strong visual rhythm.
With its generous 11’8” length and bold linear patterning, this rug would be stunning in a hallway, stair landing, or along a gallery wall. It would also make an exceptional statement under a farmhouse table or as a grounding element in a layered bohemian or eclectic space.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
