This charming antique Persian Malayer rug, dating to the early 20th century, is a richly detailed example from one of the most beloved weaving centers of Northwest Persia. Woven in a village tradition that prized individual artistic expression, this piece features a striking elongated hexagonal medallion framed by complex corner spandrels and a finely detailed main field, full of stylized flowers, latticework, and symbolic animal figures—look closely to spot the prancing horses and birds tucked among the motifs.

The palette is warm and earthy, with tones of madder red, deep indigo, ivory, and touches of ochre and pistachio green—softened beautifully by age and the nuanced abrash from natural dyes. The wool pile is supple and resilient, a testament to the quality of materials Malayer weavers were known for, and the asymmetrical knotting adds subtle irregularities that give the piece its soulful, handmade character.

Measuring 4’6” x 8’6”, this rug would make a wonderful focal point in a foyer, study, or underfoot in a cozy sitting area. It comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, MA, and is in nice antique condition with expected wear for its age, adding to its storied charm.
