This deeply atmospheric Baluch rug was woven in eastern Persia in the late 19th century, likely by a semi-nomadic weaver working within a long tradition of symbolic textile art. The field is composed of vertical rows of elongated guls—each one a soft-edged medallion filled with intricate tribal forms—arranged symmetrically across a soft madder red ground. Narrow floral and diagonal latticework borders frame the central field with geometric precision.
Crafted from hand-spun wool and dyed using natural pigments, the palette blends earthy reds, warm brown, deep indigo, and soft ivory into a timeless, grounded harmony. The rug shows scattered wear and losses, particularly along the lower and upper ends, and there are minor repairs throughout, yet the piece remains structurally sound and full of visual integrity.
This rug would be especially appealing as a floor piece in a study or meditation space, or displayed on a wall where its subtle detailing can be fully appreciated. Its patina and wear tell a story of many decades of use and quiet beauty.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
