This striking late 19th century Persian Baluch rug showcases a dynamic arrangement of compartmentalized guls and star motifs, intricately woven in a bold palette of deep red, midnight blue, ivory, and touches of ochre. The central panel is framed by a series of stepped and latch-hook borders, creating a strong architectural presence that is typical of Baluch tribal weaving. Each quadrant tells a story, drawing the eye inward with rhythmic balance and subtle asymmetry.
The wool pile is soft and lustrous, with a pleasing low cut that reflects its age and nomadic origin. The ends are finished with classic Baluch striped kilim skirts, which remain largely intact. The rug is in nice antique condition, showing wear consistent with age but still very presentable, with areas of scattered low pile and minor edge wear adding to its charm.
This piece would work beautifully in a library, study, or under a coffee table, and the rich palette could anchor a layered, collected space. Its tribal roots lend authenticity and depth, while the geometric format provides timeless appeal in both traditional and more modern interiors.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating exceptional tribal and village rugs with historic and artistic significance.
