This rare mid 19th century Baluch prayer rug features an all-over Mina Khani lattice design rendered in deep indigo, rose madder, and ivory atop a camel-colored field. While traditional prayer rugs often display an arched mihrab, this example opts for subtlety: the field is framed in a way that suggests directional intent, inviting contemplation through pattern alone. Narrow inner borders with “S” motifs and multicolor stepped diamonds are framed by classic reciprocal trellis bands.

The rug is finely knotted in wool on a wool foundation, with a delicate handle and saturated dyes that have mellowed beautifully over time. Of note to the collector is the presence of a silk repair in the field—an old but thoughtful mend, now part of the rug’s story.

This piece comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts. It remains in nice antique condition with scattered areas of wear and loss to the fringe. A refined and unusually elegant example of Baluch weaving with a design aesthetic more aligned with classical Persian carpets.
