Woven by tribal Baluch weavers in the mountainous regions of northwest Afghanistan during the mid-19th century, this exceptional little rug is a study in balance and subtlety. The diamond lattice field, finely knotted and tightly composed, offers a mesmerizing pattern that was likely intended as a meditative or protective motif. The natural brown and camel wool shows delicate striations from abrash, a hallmark of early tribal weaving and vegetable dye use.
This rug is in nice antique condition, with surface wear and some loss to the fringe ends, but retains strong color and structural integrity. The wool is soft and pliable, with a low pile consistent with older nomadic pieces.
Perfect for display as a decorative wall hanging, accent piece in a reading nook, or layered in a collected, bohemian interior. It’s the kind of piece that rewards close study and quiet appreciation.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
shows wear to the pile and binder
