This finely woven Northeast Persian Baluch prayer rug, dating to the mid-19th century, is an arresting piece of tribal textile art. The central field features a stacked diamond lattice with serrated medallions and flanking geometric forms—woven in rich tones of madder, walnut, and natural ivory—held within strong borders of angular glyphs and stylized “S” hooks. The prayer niche is clearly articulated, but it’s the pair of hand motifs woven into the top panel that most captures the spirit of this piece: a traditional symbol meant to protect the owner and sanctify the space it occupied.

Constructed with all-wool pile and foundation, the rug shows areas of wear and abrash consistent with its age, with a wonderfully mellow patina across the field. Some pile loss is evident, particularly along the lower border, but the overall integrity remains sound and display-worthy.

A striking example of spiritual textile tradition, this rug is ideal as a decorative wall hanging, meditation mat, or layered accent in a rustic or bohemian interior. Its presence is both humble and profound.

This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
