A fine example of Late Federal craftsmanship, this mahogany plantation secretary and bookcase dates to the late 1830s and exemplifies the transition toward the Empire aesthetic that was taking hold in the American South. The upper section features graceful Gothic-style mullions framing old wavy glass doors that open to reveal interior shelving for books or display. Below, a fall-front writing surface conceals fitted compartments and small drawers, providing a handsome combination of form and function.

The lower case is fitted with two full-width drawers adorned with boldly figured flame mahogany veneers and supported by turned columns on well-proportioned ball feet. The attention to detail—from the refined veneer selection to the precise joinery—reflects the artistry of a skilled cabinetmaker. The piece embodies the restrained elegance and architectural balance that mark the finest Federal period work of the 1830s.

In nice antique condition consistent with age and use, the secretary retains its original brass pulls and rich patina. One pane of glass has a crack that is hardly noticeable, and one small pull is missing from the fitted interior. These minor imperfections do little to detract from its stately presence. A superb piece of early American craftsmanship, both practical and refined, that brings history and warmth to any setting. 87h x 42w x 22d knee height 29
