A late 19th century Italian Renaissance Revival Savonarola chair with a bold architectural form and richly carved detail throughout. Inspired by earlier 15th and 16th century designs, these folding X-frame chairs were symbols of status and craftsmanship, often associated with ecclesiastical and noble settings. This example captures that spirit nicely, with its dramatic profile and strong sculptural presence.

Crafted in walnut, the chair features beautifully shaped slats forming the classic curule-style base, creating a sense of movement and strength. The carved crest rail is particularly striking, with scrolling motifs and a central medallion that draws the eye. The arms terminate in rounded handholds, while the seat panel is decorated with carved ornament that echoes the detailing above. Altogether, it’s a piece that feels both substantial and refined, with a lot of visual interest from every angle.

The chair is in nice antique condition consistent with age and normal use. There is expected wear throughout, including surface marks, minor imperfections, and areas of finish wear that speak to its age and authenticity. The two forward cross members have been repaired where they attach to the seat; this is stable and does not affect the strength or usability of the chair. The structure remains solid, and the chair presents very well overall.
