A fine example of American Chippendale revival, this handsome mahogany side chair dates to the mid-19th century and offers both sculptural elegance and timeless charm. The pierced and interlaced back splat—featuring a stylized ribbon motif framed by serpentine stiles—draws directly from 18th-century English models, while the crest rail arches gracefully in the classic Chippendale fashion. This revival piece captures the romanticism of the original period with just enough 19th-century refinement to make it equally at home in traditional or eclectic interiors.
The chair stands on bold cabriole legs carved with acanthus leaf motifs that transition into tight ball and claw feet—a hallmark of the Chippendale vocabulary. The wide slip seat is upholstered in a deep burgundy tapestry featuring a central cartouche surrounded by floral sprays, likely hand-stitched and original to the chair or added not long after. The frame is solid and well-balanced, with warm patina and excellent grain visible throughout the mahogany.
In nice antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. There is a light surface split to the front seat rail and some mild stretching and fading to the needlepoint seat, both visible in the photos but not detracting from the display value. This is a classic decorative chair with loads of character—perfect for a hall, desk, or accent placement where historical detail counts. 39h x 24w x 20d seat height 19
