A rare and richly woven tribal rug exhibiting strong Caucasian influence, this piece likely originates from the borderlands of Northeast Persia or Northwest Afghanistan—regions where Baluch weavers often incorporated designs borrowed from Kazak or other South Caucasian tribes. The repeating diamond lattice pattern framed by a highly expressive geometric border recalls motifs more commonly associated with Caucasian weaving traditions, but the finer weave, earthy palette, and use of camel tones point firmly toward Baluch tribal hands.

Woven with naturally dyed wool in shades of madder red, deep indigo, ivory, walnut brown, and oxidized copper, the rug has aged beautifully, with areas of abrash lending a painterly feel to the field. The interplay of color and geometry creates a hypnotic rhythm that would have once carried deep symbolic meaning in a tribal context, likely intended for personal or ceremonial use. The wool is soft and luminous, and the handle is supple—hallmarks of nomadic Baluch work from the mid-19th century.

This piece comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, MA. It remains in nice antique condition with expected wear and some loss to the selvage and corners, consistent with age and tribal use. A striking and collectible example that bridges tribal authenticity and design appeal.
