This small tribal mat from the late 19th century was woven by Baluch weavers in the rugged borderlands of Southeast Persia or Western Afghanistan. The dynamic chevron pattern down the center panel, framed by narrow guard stripes and wide red-and-blue borders, is characteristic of Taimani and Mushwani tribal groups, who often favored rich brown fields and sharply geometric compositions in their weavings.
Woven in all wool with a dense, earthy palette of madder, walnut, and natural undyed tones, the rug’s narrow format and deeply saturated colors suggest it may have served a functional purpose—perhaps as a small floor mat or part of a larger tribal tent ensemble. The irregularities in the spacing of the chevrons and the subtle abrash (color variation) lend this piece a wonderful sense of movement and authenticity.
In nice antique condition with expected wear from use, this rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, MA. A compelling piece for collectors interested in early tribal textiles from the greater Khorasan region.
