This richly patterned Baluch rug was handwoven in the mid-19th century by tribal weavers in the borderlands of eastern Iran or western Afghanistan. The field is filled with a lattice of octagonal guls, each enclosing finely drawn symbolic motifs, and arranged in perfect visual rhythm. Rendered in cochineal red, indigo blue, and walnut brown, the palette is entirely derived from natural dyes and has matured into a warm, time-softened harmony.
Multiple borders, including checker, latch-hook, and diagonal stripe patterns, frame the composition, adding movement and reinforcing the tribal identity of the piece. Wide kilim ends with simple stripe decoration add structure and visual balance. The rug shows wear, thinning, and scattered repairs, most visibly at the center, yet retains strong visual presence and structural integrity.
Ideal for collectors of tribal textiles or decorators looking to bring a sense of age, authenticity, and grounded beauty into a space. Use it in a cozy reading nook, study, or draped along a rustic bench or over the back of a leather sofa.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
