Woven in the late 19th century by Baluch tribal weavers in the borderlands of Northeast Persia and Western Afghanistan, this striking flatweave is a beautiful example of a sofreh, traditionally used for food preparation and ceremonial sharing of bread. Its narrow and elongated format, combined with precise banded motifs in rich madder red, deep indigo, and earthy greens, suggests it may have been woven for a very specific domestic function—yet today, it works wonderfully as a decorative runner or striking wall hanging.

The pattern is composed of repeating geometric rows with delicate white highlights and symbolic linear forms that carry tribal significance. The wool has a soft, slightly glossy handle, and the weaving is tight and even—hallmarks of high-quality Baluch flatweaves from this era. These textiles were often made on portable ground looms by women for personal or dowry use, making each one unique.

This piece comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, MA and is in nice antique condition with some age-related wear and fraying at the ends, consistent with its use and age. A beautiful survivor with a bold tribal aesthetic, ready to be appreciated in a new context.
