Woven by the Timuri tribes of western Afghanistan or the border regions of eastern Iran in the late 19th century, this antique Baluch prayer rug is a fine example of understated tribal artistry. The stepped mihrab (prayer niche) is delicately framed by a narrow ivory zigzag border, leading the eye into a field of repeating four-pointed star motifs—sometimes referred to as pinwheels—symbolizing protection and endurance. The surrounding borders include small-scale glyphs and stylized motifs, adding further richness to the composition.

Wool on a wool foundation with flatwoven kilim ends in a bold banded chevron design, the rug retains its structure and visual impact despite areas of wear, minor losses, and a slightly asymmetric shape from decades of genuine use. The natural dyes—deep indigo, madder, and walnut—have aged into a warm, smoky palette that feels both ancient and modern.

A powerful choice for collectors of tribal prayer rugs or for decorators drawn to quiet, soulful design. This rug is perfect as a meditative wall hanging, entry accent, or draped on a rustic bench.

This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
