This rare antique sofreh was woven by Baluch tribes in the border regions of eastern Iran and western Afghanistan in the late 19th century. Originally used in domestic settings for the preparation and serving of bread, sofrehs like this one were functional textiles imbued with quiet artistry. The narrow horizontal stripes are woven in undyed ivory and brown wool, creating a simple but striking rhythm. At each end, colorful flatwoven bands of indigo, madder, and golden saffron provide a decorative contrast—hallmarks of the tribal aesthetic.

Woven in wool on a wool foundation, this piece remains in nice antique condition with some expected wear and a few scattered areas of minor thinning and fringe loss. The field is supple and pliable, with a soft hand and a lovely, natural sheen from age and use.

Perfect as a table runner, wall hanging, or layered at the foot of a bed or bench, this Baluch sofreh offers both cultural depth and minimalist charm. Its quiet beauty would complement interiors ranging from rustic and organic to clean and modern.

This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
