This beautifully balanced antique Baluch sofreh, woven in flat weave technique with supplementary weft embroidery, is a striking example of tribal textile art from the borderlands of Northeast Persia. Its compact dimensions and deliberate design indicate its use as a sofreh—a ceremonial or daily-use cloth used for bread-making, food preparation, or ritual display.
The golden camel ground is punctuated by intricately embroidered motifs in dark indigo, ivory, and brick red, arranged symmetrically in narrow horizontal bands. Sawtooth motifs line the edges of the field, giving the piece a dynamic architectural framing often seen in earlier Baluch weavings. Embroidered rosettes in the borders and linear talismanic motifs in the field lend both aesthetic rhythm and symbolic weight to the composition.
From the private collection of a well-known antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, this piece is particularly appealing to collectors for its excellent condition, fine weave, and balanced proportions. A superb textile for those who appreciate the quiet sophistication and cultural context of tribal flatweaves from the 19th century.
