This handsome late 19th century Baluch rug from Northeast Persia features a richly saturated palette anchored by deep indigo and madder red. A striking diagonal lattice design fills the field, enclosing repeating tree-like motifs that suggest stylized cypress or flowering shrubs—a nod to the garden symbolism often found in tribal weaving.
The rug is framed by multiple borders, including a distinctive ivory “hash-mark” band and broader bands with classic geometric devices in navy, ochre, and chocolate brown. At both ends, you’ll find the original kilim skirt with multi-color horizontal striping still intact—an unusual and desirable survival.
The wool pile is low and even, with visible wear in the center field consistent with its age and tribal use. From the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, this rug is a strong example of Baluch weaving with a refined color story and an expressive design vocabulary rooted in centuries of nomadic tradition.
