Woven by a Baluch weaver in Northeast Persia around the mid-19th century, this soulful prayer rug is a rare survivor that speaks to the spiritual and artistic traditions of a nomadic people. The design centers on a dramatic Tree of Life composition that ascends from the foot of the field toward the stylized mihrab, branching into an intricate canopy of floral and vegetal forms.

The palette is earthy and subdued, with soft madder, rust, and natural brown tones offset by ivory and deep indigo. The kilim end finish remains partially intact, and the subtle abrashed field adds visual rhythm. While there is expected wear and areas of oxidation in the brown tones, the rug retains good visual integrity and a deeply evocative presence.

From the private collection of a longtime antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, this piece will appeal to serious collectors for its early date, rare layout, and excellent use of space within the small prayer format. A superb example of the expressive capabilities of tribal weavers.
