Woven by a Baluch weaver in Northeast Persia around the mid-19th century, this antique prayer rug exemplifies the contemplative and asymmetrical creativity often found in early tribal weavings. The composition features a stepped mihrab field framed by double-panel spandrels—an unusual and striking layout that sets this piece apart from more standardized examples.

The ivory prayer niche is filled with a staggered lattice of angular floral motifs rendered in indigo, madder, camel, and touches of coral red. Flanking rectangular panels—possibly symbolic or totemic—anchor the upper corners of the composition and lend the rug a balanced but subtly enigmatic structure. The palette is soft and earthy, and the rug retains considerable pile with typical oxidation in the darker tones.

From the private collection of a longtime antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, this rug offers a strong and early example of Baluch prayer weaving, and would appeal to collectors for both its rare design format and deeply rooted tribal character.
