Woven by tribal artisans in eastern Iran or western Afghanistan during the mid-19th century, this antique Baluch rug showcases a field of repeating octagonal guls, each rendered in fine wool and dyed with natural pigments in earthy tones of walnut, aubergine, brick, and ivory. The structured symmetry and subtle variations in motif placement lend a quiet rhythm to the design, while the crosshatched and hooked medallions allude to deeper tribal symbolism.
Although it follows the proportions of a prayer rug, this piece lacks a pronounced mihrab, suggesting it may have served both devotional and utilitarian purposes. The side borders, filled with angular repeating latticework, are classic Baluch, while the flatwoven kilim ends and tight weave reflect the practical expertise of the maker.
In nice antique condition, the rug shows moderate wear and abrash consistent with its age and long use. It would be ideal as a decorative accent, tabletop textile, or wall hanging—particularly for collectors drawn to the quieter elegance of tribal design.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
shows wear consistent with age
