This rare early Baluch prayer rug, dating to the early 19th century, is a powerful example of nomadic tribal weaving with spiritual significance. Woven in the border regions of eastern Iran or western Afghanistan, the rug features a pronounced stepped mihrab (prayer niche) with an intricate field of octagonal and lozenge motifs, rendered in rich tones of rust, indigo, walnut brown, and soft olive. Narrow rows of tribal symbols and latch-hook guard bands frame the field with quiet rhythm.

Hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation, the rug is flanked at both ends by flatwoven striped kilim panels—a practical and decorative feature of older tribal prayer rugs. The piece shows considerable age, with overall wear, thinning, minor holes, and fading consistent with two centuries of life and devotional use. Yet the design remains legible and deeply expressive, embodying the intimacy and personal scale of Baluch weaving at its most authentic.

With its deeply spiritual roots and restrained color palette, this rug is ideal for a contemplative corner, displayed as wall art, or used as a study piece in a collector’s ensemble. Its quiet power and historical presence are hard to match.

This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
