This striking antique Baluch rug from the Khorasan region of Northeast Persia features a beautifully drawn field of repeating tree-of-life motifs, symmetrically arranged in tight vertical columns over a glowing madder red ground. The use of deep indigo and walnut brown for the motifs gives the pattern a rhythmic, almost architectural cadence, while retaining the organic fluidity of tribal design.

The rug is framed by multiple guard borders, including a bold main border with geometric crenellations and a charming dotted floral inner border. The weaver’s inclusion of subtly varied elements within the repeat pattern reveals the improvisational touch typical of Baluch tribal work from this period. Woven with handspun wool on a wool foundation, the piece retains its original kilim ends with red and green striping—another hallmark of Baluch craftsmanship.

From the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, Massachusetts, this example is particularly appealing to collectors for its size, color saturation, and symbolic content. A wonderful piece for those who value the expressive geometry and meditative repetition found in 19th-century tribal weaving.
