Woven in the tribal regions of Khorasan in northeast Iran during the late 19th century, this Baluch prayer rug is a rare and beautifully preserved example of its kind. The field features a mesmerizing pattern of eight-pointed star motifs—sometimes interpreted as celestial snowflakes—executed in natural dyes of midnight blue, madder red, and soft walnut on a luminous golden ochre ground. The stepped mihrab is flanked by intricately woven side panels and crowned with an upper spandrel of crosshatched tribal devices.
Framed by classic Baluch border motifs and finished with flatwoven kilim ends, this rug retains its integrity despite areas of wear and thinning consistent with age. The wool is soft and finely spun, and the high knot density suggests the hand of a particularly skilled weaver.
Its refined symmetry and bold contrast make it as suitable for wall display as it is for floor use in a quiet reading nook or personal sanctuary. A striking addition for collectors of tribal rugs or anyone drawn to the meditative geometry and soulful palette of antique weavings.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
