This finely woven Baluch rug, often referred to as a Balisht, dates to the mid-19th century and likely hails from the tribal weaving communities of eastern Iran or western Afghanistan. The field is composed of a tightly packed lattice of octagonal guls, each filled with complex latch-hook motifs and stylized tribal symbols. The design is rendered in a warm, earthy palette of ivory, walnut, madder red, and deep indigo, all naturally dyed and showing beautiful abrash throughout.
Woven in wool on a wool foundation, this piece is in nice antique condition for its age, with some expected wear and a few fringe losses, particularly at the ends. The compact size, fine knotting, and bold graphic presence suggest it may have originally served as a bagface or small utility mat, though it holds its own as a standalone textile. The motifs and structure reflect the weaver’s deep cultural vocabulary and command of balance within a compact format.
Perfect as a tabletop textile, small area accent, or wall display, this rug brings tribal authenticity and quiet strength to any space. It would pair beautifully with warm woods, leather, and other natural materials.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
shows wear to the binder and fringe with some small staining to the field
