Woven by Baluch tribal weavers in the early 19th century, this rare and early example showcases the quiet sophistication of nomadic craftsmanship from the borderlands of eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. The field is filled with vertical rows of stylized trees or palm-like motifs, arranged with meditative repetition across a camel-toned ground. The saturated palette of madder red, indigo, and ivory remains legible despite significant wear, while the triple border bands frame the composition with balance and delicacy.
Hand-knotted with wool pile on a wool foundation, the rug has softened with age and displays scattered areas of wear and pile loss, particularly in the center. Still, it remains structurally sound and full of character. Its abrash and irregularities speak to its handwoven origins and to the passage of time—qualities highly valued by collectors and admirers of early tribal rugs.
This piece would make a soulful addition to a study, library, or personal retreat. Its subtle color palette and repeating pattern make it equally effective hung as a textile or laid as a grounding layer in a quiet space.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
The field shows wear to the pile down to the warp and weft.
