This striking Afghan prayer rug, attributed to the Kizil Ayak sub-tribe of the Ersari Turkmen, presents an elaborate architectural depiction of a mosque rendered in deeply saturated hues of rust, ivory, and black. Likely woven in the early 20th century, the rug captures a stylized interpretation of the Kaaba at Mecca, flanked by symmetrical towers and minarets, all surrounded by latticework and geometric framing motifs. Rugs of this type were often used not only for prayer but also as a visual meditation on sacred space.

Woven with hand-spun wool and natural dyes, this piece reflects the Kizil Ayak weavers’ distinctive graphic sensibility, with its strong outlines and almost architectural precision. There is scattered wear to the pile throughout and several small moth nibbles in the field, as seen in the photographs. The borders remain largely intact, with just minor loss along the selvedge and ends. Still, the design reads boldly, and the rug retains excellent visual impact and cultural resonance.

Whether laid on the floor of a quiet study or meditation room, used as a runner in a hallway, or hung as a powerful textile statement on the wall, this rug brings with it a sense of place and tradition. Its rich colors and architectural lines pair beautifully with both modern minimalist and eclectic interiors.

This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
